Alocasia 'Pink Dragon'

Alocasia 'Pink Dragon' is a cultivated Alocasia with rose-pink petioles, green arrow-shaped leaves and darker veins. The coloured stems lift the foliage above the pot and stay visible below the leaves.

The leaves are slightly glossy, with clear basal lobes and a pointed tip. Depending on leaf age and growing conditions, the underside can appear green to deeper burgundy.

Pink petioles with arrow leaves

  • Pink to rose-toned petioles.
  • Green arrow-shaped leaves with darker venation.
  • Upright growth from a central rhizome.
  • Lower leaf surface can show green to burgundy tones.

Aurora and Pink Dragon

In European cultivation, Alocasia 'Aurora' was rebranded as Alocasia 'Pink Dragon'. The plant grows from a rhizomatous base; cold wet substrate can soften petioles, while filtered light keeps new leaves from scorching.

Care for pink-stemmed growth

  • Light: In darker months, use a grow light if new leaves come in small, weak or stretched. Direct midday sun can scorch the leaves.
  • Water: Let the upper layer of substrate begin to dry before watering again. Keep the mix lightly moist while new leaves form, but let it dry further in cool rooms so the rhizome does not sit wet.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky aroid mix with bark, coco chips, perlite, pumice or lava. The rhizome needs drainage and oxygen around the roots.
  • Humidity: Humid, ventilated air makes new leaves less likely to stick, tear or dry at the tips. Airflow lets moisture dry around the crown.
  • Temperature: Keep the pot warm while new leaves are forming; cold roots can slow leaf emergence and soften petioles. When the room cools, let the upper mix dry further before the next soak.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly as new leaves form. Reduce feeding when new leaves stop forming or come in much smaller.
  • Potting: Choose a draining pot that fits the root ball closely. Move up gradually once roots have filled the container.
  • Propagation: Propagation is by corms, offsets or rhizome division once the young plant has fresh roots.

Pink petioles under growth stress

  • Drooping petioles: Check substrate moisture, root health and temperature before adjusting watering.
  • Yellowing older leaves: One ageing leaf can retire during new growth; several yellowing leaves point to root or watering stress.
  • Brown leaf marks: Review direct sun exposure, dry air and cold contact near windows.
  • Speckled leaves: Inspect the undersides and petiole bases for spider mites.

Alocasia Pink Dragon toxicity

Alocasia 'Pink Dragon' contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals. If plant tissue is ingested, it can irritate the mouth, tongue and throat. Keep it away from pets and children that may nibble leaves or stems, and wash your hands after handling damaged tissue.

Name and aroid background

Alocasia belongs to the family Araceae. The genus name combines Greek a-, meaning apart from, with the related aroid name Colocasia. 'Pink Dragon' refers to the pink petioles and angular leaf shape.

Add Alocasia 'Pink Dragon' to your collection

Choose Alocasia 'Pink Dragon' for rose-toned stems, arrow-shaped leaves and a clear pink-and-green contrast above the pot.

If you have a chewer - This is the bone for you!
I have purchased this bone three times and thought it was about time I wrote a review. My dog is a chewer - No matter how tough the toy claims to be, he rips it apart in minutes. And although he has a few hard bones, he prefers the toys he can damage. I received this bone as a gift and expected it to be another one that would fall into the pile of rarely touched bones. But this is the bone that he grabs almost every day. I honestly don't know what makes this bone different, but he loves it! It holds up to heavy duty chewing no matter how much he chews it. It holds its shape and (apparently) its flavor. Little bits do break off and it shows wear over time, but it is very long lasting. Added bonus - As a dog parent, I love that it has no smell and it never gets wet/sticky/gross.
